International Women’s Day
Every year on March 8, International Women’s Day takes place with the purpose to highlight women around the world. Women’s Day reminds us of how far we have come and to honor the strong women who through history actively fought for women’s rights, justice and equality. It is also important to remember that we still have a long way to reach complete equality worldwide.
International Women’s Day originated from the demand of women’s right to vote and as an initiative of the United Nations, the International Women’s Day has been officially celebrated since 1977. In 1978, Women’s Day was added to the UN list of days to celebrate. The purpose is to strive for gender equality; women and men should have the same opportunities to shape society, as well as their own lives. This includes, for example, power, economy, work, and health. Looking around the world today, this is something that has yet to be achieved and is the main reason International Women’s Day is so important.
In many parts of the world, mainly in low-income countries, women are discriminated from birth since men are favored more. This is usually based on traditions and cultural values. As a result, fewer women receive an education, often have health issues and are forced into arranged marriages at a young age. Even in countries like Sweden, which is considered one of the most equal countries, there are still major differences between women and men. Among other things, men tend to earn more income and hold management positions while women earn less but have a higher education.
Even though we still have a long way to go, it is also important to stop and look back at how far we have come and achieved. We need to celebrate the women who have taken a stand against inequality and fight for justice. Why not take an opportunity to pay attention to a strong woman in your presence? Perhaps this woman is your mother who has always supported you, a sister who has always been there for you, a teacher who has believed in your future or a colleague who creates a fun work environment?
iDeal Of Sweden wants to take the opportunity to celebrate the following amazing women:
Winnie Harlow is a 23-year Canadian model and body activist who turned her skin condition into something positive and took the fashion industry by storm. When Winnie was four years old, she was diagnosed with vitiligo, which made her skin tone uneven. At school she was bullied because of this skin condition. Winnie learned to accept the vitiligo, which was to her advantage. As a 16-year-old, she was discovered by a photographer in Toronto and afterward she was also discovered by Tyra Banks and competed in America’s Next Top Model 2014. Since then, she has been seen in several campaigns, including Diesel and Desigual, and also featured during several fashion weeks.
iDeal loves Winnie because she stands up for the fact that all people are beautiful just the way they are, and that no one should be ashamed of their body or looks.
